About Us
Health Hawke’s Bay supports and strengthens primary health care across Hawke’s Bay.
We work in partnership with general practice, Māori and community providers to improve access to care and enable Pae Ora – healthy futures for whānau.
What is a Primary Health Organisation?
A PHO provides primary health services either directly or indirectly through general practice and other health and social care providers. These services are designed to improve and maintain the health of the enrolled PHO population, and eliminate inequities in health outcomes that exist for Māori, Pacific peoples and high needs populations.
Health Hawke’s Bay receives funding from the Government to subsidise a range of health services. The amount of funding received is based on the numbers and the characteristics (e.g. age, sex, and ethnicity) of their enrolled population.
The funding pays for services to:
- provide care and treatment when people are ill
- help people to stay healthy
- connect with groups in the community who have poor health or who are missing out on primary health care
Our Strategic Plan – Ka Hikitia
To support our provider network to achieve equitable health outcomes for Māori.
Our three year commitment is to:
- Prioritise achieving equity for Māori at the heart
of how we operate. - Recognise and embed our commitment
to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. - Embrace wellbeing as a broader concept than health.
- Partner with other organisations to increase
the value we deliver.
About our region
Hawke’s Bay, also known as Te Matau-a-Māui, is a distinctive and diverse region on the east coast of Aotearoa New Zealand’s North Island. Shaped by coastlines, plains, rivers, and ranges, the region is recognised for its natural beauty, fertile land, and strong sense of community. From Wairoa in the north to Central Hawke’s Bay in the south, the rohe is home to vibrant towns, rural communities, and coastal settlements, each contributing to the character and resilience of the region.
With a rich Māori history and deep connections to whenua and moana, Hawke’s Bay is guided by tikanga, whakapapa, and a strong emphasis on whānau and collective wellbeing. The region is also known for its productive primary industries, particularly agriculture, horticulture, and viticulture, alongside growing sectors in health, education, and innovation.
Hawke’s Bay people are known for their warmth, practicality, and commitment to supporting one another—traits that are especially evident during times of challenge. Community connection, collaboration, and care for future generations are central to life in the region.
